How to be Free from Fear

We all know what fear feels like. A family member was in the room that you walked in, before you noticed them. A loud noise made you jump. A spider was on the wall. We’ve all had our fair share of fight or flight responses, but for some, fear is really paralyzing and can stop people from living. Is that you? Afraid of what people will think? Afraid of something not being perfect? Afraid of the end of the world?

The good thing is that God talks about being unafraid throughout the Bible. He loves His children and wants to teach us how to trust Him and to deal with things like fear. Did you know that fear isn’t a feeling but a spirit? It doesn’t have to be a part of you!

My mom used to tell me that I was afraid of my own shadow. I thought fear was a natural part of me. It wasn’t. I had to learn (trust) that God is my Heavenly Daddy and that no devil can scare Him, so the devil had better watch out before I get my Heavenly Father on him! Haha

Here are five things I’ve learned about fear and how to overcome it:

1. No longer tell everyone that you’re scared.  Tell God. He’s the one that fear fears. Cry to Him about it, if necessary. Anything always starts with a share with the Most High God who can and will help you through any pain or darkness – no matter how painful or how dark.

2. If you’re familiar with Scripture and one comes to mind, or a worship song comes to mind, read the Scripture or play the song. Reading the lyrics helps us to read what God is speaking to you.

3. Say this: God has not given me the spirit of fear; but [He’s given me His Spirit] of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. That’s 2 Timothy 1:7 and a reminder that you don’t have to fear. You belong to God, not Satan.

4. Say 2 Timothy 1:7 until you believe it against whatever fear is trying to bring up to you. It really works!

5. Share with someone who can pray with you or encourage you with God’s Word. If you have no one that you can trust, tell God what’s on your mind. He will help you.

Doing these things can help take away fear, which causes loneliness, sadness, doubt. You don’t need any of that. God didn’t create you with fear. He created you with faith.
